Kuschel J: Schon Reinheit

Released in Summer 2023, this is Kuschel J's limited edition scent 'Schon Reinheit'. As I've mentioned before with Fernanda's scents, Japanese brands tend to be obsessed with exclusivity and limited edition products (that rarely if ever make comebacks), and Kuschel J is no different. For those curious, Kuschel J is actually part of a larger parent company called Fragrancy Online, and they also own the brands Savon &Co, Ohana Mahaalo, Lawrence, Clean Original and Moana Pakipika. The first two are extremely popular and you're most likely to come across all of these on offer at any Japanese drugstore or shop that sells fragrances. Ohana Mahaalo and Kuschel J also tend to be relatively similar in terms of 'fragrance vibes', though I tend to prefer Kuschel J as they usually have a slightly, but noticeable tendency to be more hyperrealistic in comparison. Based on my history with both brands, I've picked up a few things from Kuschel J, but never was able to find anything I enjoyed from Ohana Mahaalo enough to purchase. According to the website, they also use 'environmentally friendly glass bottles' that have been recycled across all brands.

They offer a few variations on products, with a body spray option (as shown above), a fragrance mist, an EDP, a fragrance rich hair oil, and a body lotion.

Product description (translated from Japanese):

Schon means 'beautiful' and reinheit means 'pure' in the flower language of lily of the valley.

Clear light blue sky without a single cloud
A small pure white lily of the valley gently sways in the wind.
The heart-pounding summer air gently snuggles up to you

Marine on the early summer breeze and the clean scent of lily of the valley
Scent notes: Muguet, marine, rose

Although I wasn't expecting to enjoy this scent, I really liked what they had for this - and I think it's the perfect compliment to a summer scent. This is definitely a sweet scent especially with the beautiful syrup note from the muguet, and I often enjoy a rich lily scent, although I think this one actually leans a little grape like, picture cotton candy green grapes (I have no idea where the grape comes from but I love it), paired with a sprinkling of light white sugar and rose. The marine note here is a lovely nuanced addition to the scent too - adding just a touch of saltiness to the sugared rose. It manages to stay fresh, sweet and if it had a job, it would definitely be beach. I really liked this scent, and I enjoyed it a lot, especially with the lovely balance of sweetness and a touch of salt here - I would have definitely picked this one up if I was able to get a smaller size!

  1. German names in Japan crack me up. (A hairspray called Luft? A toner called Wasser? A nail polished remover called Rentner??) This one isn't even correct, since we change our adjectives to match the noun, so it would be Schöne Reinheit (beautiful purity). Oh Japan...

The scent sounds nice, though! I wonder if it resembles Replica's Lazy Sunday Morning, which I know is very popular (and expensive) in Japan.

    1. How interesting! I definitely wouldn't have picked up on it, but Kuschel J's entire naming formula is seemingly a mishmash of German (inspired) names - Engel Gluck and Ruhe Mond are their most recent releases!

And the scent I have to admit is one of the nicer, more distinct blends I've tried! I tried Lazy Sunday side by side and it's not similar at all IMO - this scent is far more sugary sweet with a dab of saltiness without much complexity or depth to it, whereas Lazy Sunday is more of a layered, musky floral with woody nuances. The only similarity would be the lily of the valley accord but I don't think either of them feature as heavily as you'd imagine in either fragrance. Replica is definitely pricey, and I'm also surprised to find that Matcha Meditation isn't for sale at the Replica MM counters in Japan - I'd have assumed it would be a big hit because of the popularity of tea notes. Although interestingly enough with the resemblance, I'd say Kuschel's Yuzu scent is very similar to Jo Malone's Orange Bitters that just came back for Christmas! And at a far cheaper price tag.
