Uzu by FlowFushi: Eyeliner in Brown Review

If you're looking for Moteliner by FlowFushi, click here

Uzu by FlowFushi is a continuation of the original FlowFushi brand, which is made to be vegan, cruelty free formula/version of the eyeliner and is patch tested on sensitive skin.
It also boasts the trademark heavy structured packaging, and their special high quality artist grade brush.
Since the original Moteliner has indeed been discontinued and is only able for purchase from other online resale sites, Uzu has stepped in as the sequel that nobody asked for - so let's see if it lives up to the hype.

The information (found here, and on the official site) says that :
The Yamato Takumi™ brush used for the Eye Opening Liner features a similar blend of fibers inspired by traditional Japanese brush-making techniques. The handle of the liner, too, is of a similar ergonomic, octagonal design, and also boast 28% more bristles in this brush, which has better tension and springiness.
The eyeliner formulation itself is called WP Film™, which uses a hybrid polymer that provides the perfect line all day against any water, sweat, humidity, tears or oil.
The UZU liner is 100% vegan and cruelty free. This liner is also free of parabens, phthalate, sulfate, dyes, gluten, and alcohol, and has been allergy and patch tested for sensitive skin. It is also hassle free, and easy to remove with warm water.

The  "Eye Opening Liner" in more colors, such as grey, khaki, navy, purple, light blue, pink, yellow and white, as shown on the sheet above, and also the color schemes below.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

One thing to note, is that the brush tips for the lighter colors, such as light blue, orange, yellow, white and pink were actually felt tipped, rather than the original brush tip that is offered with the grey, black, brown, brown black, burgundy and khaki.
The formula for these lighter colors also felt a little different - a close comparison would be NYX's Vivid Brights Liner, which has a slightly thicker consistency, or Illamasqua's liquid liners. These eyeliners tend to come off in larger flakes, a bit less close to the skin.
As shown in this picture, the white, orange and yellow formulas do look and perform slightly differently, and the ingredients list reflects these changes.

Performance:

Wear time: Unlike the original MoteLiner, this eyeliner is a lot less water, sweat and oil resistant. While it doesn't smudge, it just smears off.
I wore this both in summer and winter, and experienced moderate fading, no transfer, but quite a bit of smudging - the eyeliner was intact for more of 3-4 hours, but wasn't at all long lasting.
I typically wet my finger, and rub over eyeliner swatches when I first test them, and unfortunately both formulas (felt and brush) seemed to rub off very easily. I assume this is in part, due to the hassle free removal with warm water - but I yawn a lot and tend to rub my eyes and this just comes right off.

Precision: The brush tip remains one of the best points of this liner. I can quote myself freely with this experience.
"As it has been made by brush makers, the ease of application is incredibly easy so you can build up a thick line and thin it out relatively easily. You can use this close to the lashline with no irritation at all, and it's very comfortable to use.
While it is not the thinnest eyeliner (I prefer DUP for thin lines), it gives you a variety of applications and you can do both thick and thin liners with ease. "

Pigmentation: This has medium pigmentation, it is a little more pigmented that D-UP, but a little less than the original MoteLiner. With the application, this is easy to layer as well to get sharper lines and stronger color, but you will need to get a few passes to get a darker finish.

Price: at 1500 JYP, or $21AUD,  in comparison to MoteLiner's performance, at a similar price, I feel that trading performance on a vegan, and cruelty free formula isn't something that I would personally opt for.

In conclusion:

This eyeliner may be a vegan, cruelty free alternative, but the changes in the formula essentially feels like a different eyeliner. While I originally bought this to see what the difference was between Moteliner and Uzu, in terms of overall performance, Moteliner smashes Uzu out of the park. For those looking for that long lasting, smudge and budge proof liner, what Moteliner provided in spades, I can't say that Uzu's Eye Opening Liner has done the same. Since Moteliner's discontinuation, I cannot recommend this as a replacement, and am intensely disappointed that it has disappeared off the shelves, and replaced with something that is completely different.

If you are looking for something with similar price and performance to D-UP's Silky Liquid Liner (which retails for 1400JPY), I think that this is not a bad alternative if that's what you're looking for in a liner.

Personally, I do still need an easy to apply, brush tip, long lasting pen liner and that's where MoteLiner fits into my life, but this feels more like an better sequel companion to MoteLiner, rather than a remake of it.

  1. Oh my goodness...I'm glad I'm not the only one who got so bummed by the discontinuance of Moteliner. I tried so many different liquid eyeliner, and Moteliner so far is the best best best of all. The color is so rich, the brush softness is perfect and it stays all day and night.. I even go swimming with it couple of times. I'm super sad when I hear the product is discontinued. Can someone please tell FlowFushi to make this product again? I really hate to have to waste my money from trying different eyeliners again.. 😔😔

    1. I definitely agree! I'm not sure why they'd change the formula when the old one was so fantastic, and the new one has been pretty disappointing. If you're looking for a recommendation, I recently tried the Leanani eyeliner which has really strong staying power but is a little bit sticky after 7-8 hours of wear, but it's definitely the best liner I've tried after the original FlowFushi!
